• Research Compendium: Western & Chinese Zodiac Sign Characteristics
• Purpose: Source base for data collection/analysis to write original sign and element descriptions with a custom interpretation.

1. SOURCE WEBSITES#

Baseline dataset: 12 Western + 12 Chinese = 24 core descriptions per full source pair; ~5 sources per system ≈ 60 description samples each for analysis.

2. WESTERN ZODIAC FRAMEWORK#

• The 12 signs represent "twelve basic personality types."
• Structure: 4 elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) x 3 modalities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable).
• No dedicated compatibility section; relationship analysis is chart-based (see synastry).

• Simplified sign-level rules (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrological_aspect):
  • Trine (120°, 4 signs apart): same element -> harmony, ease. BEST.
  • Sextile (60°, 2 apart): compatible elements (fire<->air, earth<->water). GOOD.
  • Square (90°, 3 apart): same modality, clashing elements. TENSION.
  • Opposition (180°, 6 apart): polarizing, prone to exaggeration. MAGNETIC/TENSE.
  • Conjunction (0°, same sign): mutually intensifying.
  • Semisextile (30°, 1 apart): subtle, neutral.
  • Quincunx (150°, 5 apart): imbalanced, awkward.
• KEY PROPERTY: compatibility is purely a function of angular distance -> matrix is rotationally symmetric (each row = previous row shifted by one).

3. CHINESE ZODIAC FRAMEWORK#

• 12 animals mapped to the 12 Earthly Branches; each has a Yin/Yang polarity (alternating, starting Yang) and a fixed Wu Xing element.
• Compatibility derives from BRANCH POSITION (trines, six harmonies, clashes), with elements as a secondary overlay.

3.1 Sign reference table (with Yin/Yang and Unicode)#

Emoji block: Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictographs (U+1F300–U+1F5FF). NOTE: unlike the Western signs, the animal emoji are NOT contiguous — other animal variants (e.g., 🐁 MOUSE U+1F401, 🐄 COW, 🐈 CAT) sit between them. No dedicated "zodiac glyph" block exists for the Chinese signs.

Yin/Yang pattern: strictly alternating — all odd-numbered animals are Yang (Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog); all even-numbered are Yin (Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig).

4. CROSS-SYSTEM ANALYSIS: ELEMENTAL MATCH CAPABILITIES#

4.1 Where the systems ALIGN (shared geometry)#

4.2 Where they DIVERGE (critical for modeling)#

• Same element != compatibility in Chinese astrology: Ox(Earth)<->Goat(Earth) and Dragon(Earth)<->Dog(Earth) are WORST matches, while in Western logic same-element = trine = BEST. Direct contradiction.
• Six Harmonies ignore elements: half are generative pairs, half are destructive pairs that are still "best matches" (Rat-Ox, Rabbit-Dog, Snake-Monkey). Compatibility comes from branch pairing, not elements.
• Reversed causality: Western compatibility is DERIVED FROM elements; Chinese compatibility is derived from branch position, with elements as a correlated-but-secondary overlay.

4.3 Synthesis (basis for original interpretation)#

• Universal layer: GEOMETRY (angular distance on the 12-point circle) — both cultures agree 120° = harmony, 180° = conflict.
• Cultural flavor layer: ELEMENTS — 4-element derivation grid (Western) vs 5-element generative/destructive cycles (Chinese).
• A unified element-based compatibility engine is NOT possible; a unified geometry-based engine IS.
