About Bluesky Personal Data Servers and migrations#

If you want to move your Bluesky account to different infrastructure to not rely on Bluesky PBC, here are some things to know and recommended servers to migrate to.

The best tool to use for a migration is https://pdsmoover.com, specifically the Moover page is where migrations happen.

About migrating#

  • If your handle ends in *.bsky.social, you'll have to get a new handle (only the ending must change; you can usually keep the front part of your handle). If it's a custom one (your own domain or a Community Handles setup), you can keep it with no change.
  • A migration will NOT delete any data. Your entire account will be perfectly preserved, just under a new hosting provider. You will keep your DID (the random string that starts with did:plc:). You can continue to use the bsky.app website and the Bluesky mobile app.
  • Your account must be active to migrate. If it is taken down (suspended) and not reinstated, then you'll have to create an entirely new account.
  • You'll need to sign out of websites or apps where your account is signed in, including bsky.app and the Bluesky mobile app. You'll sign back in with the new hosting provider.
  • Websites or apps that linked to your Bluesky account may require that you reconnect it.

About PDS MOOver Backups/Restore#

You can use the PDS MOOver Backups tool (https://pdsmoover.com/backups) to have them take a backup of your Bluesky data and give you a Rotation Key you can use to restore your account on different infrastructure should something happen to your account's PDS.

The process of backing up data and setting up your Rotation Key is part of the migration process, but you can use the Backups page on the website to perform the backup step without migrating. If you do this and Bluesky PBC takes down your account, you can go to the Restore page (https://pdsmoover.com/restore) with the Rotation Key to forcibly restore your account onto another PDS.

The server list#

When migrating, if you had a custom domain handle, choose "I have my own domain setup" in the dropdown of handle endings and enter your custom handle. If there is no dropdown, just enter your custom handle. Otherwise, select an appropriate handle ending and enter a username.

  • Blacksky | PDS endpoint: blacksky.app | operated by @blackskyweb.xyz / @rude1.blacksky.team
    • Blacksky has a PDS MOOver preset: https://pdsmoover.com/moover/blacksky.app
    • Anyone can use this server, you don't have to be Black.
    • For bsky.social handle users: If you're Black, you can get a handle ending in *.blacksky.app. If you aren't, the recommended option is *.myatproto.social.
  • Eurosky | PDS endpoint: eurosky.social | operated by @eurosky.social
    • Eurosky has a PDS MOOver preset: https://pdsmoover.com/moover/eurosky.social
    • Anyone can be on Eurosky, their servers are in Europe (hosted by Hetzner in Falkenstein, Germany) but you don't have to be European to get an account.
    • For bsky.social handle users: you can get a new handle ending in *.eurosky.social.

Know about a public PDS that isn't listed here? You can ask me to add it.
