Splatoon
Obviously a very WIP page. very.
Splatoon has and always will be a huge thing in my life. I have been playing it since Splatoon 1 starting ~2016, and so i missed all
1's splatfests. It's kinda the one thing i've consistently loved for over 10 years though, something about it just makes me so happy
and scratches an itch in me, from the artstyle to the music.
I think one of the main reasons is its theme. It's all about self-expression and style - the same reason why so many other autists love
sonic, but with squids instead. With a surprisingly deep and relatively dark lore for a game this colorful and bright (even the in-game
bands have their own lore!) makes it great to hyperfocus over. The marine-life part is also a contributor.
The Start of the Hyperfixation
Around 2016, I was hanging out at a former family friend's place, where they had a Wii U (like me :p) with both mario maker and
splatoon, although I didn't know what that was and just wanted to play mario maker. I sadly don't remember much anymore, but this was
my first exposure outside of ads.
Fast forward sometime later, I got splatoon for my Wii U (don't know why), and was - to my surprise - instantly hooked (heh)! Something
about the gameplay and ESPECIALLY the aesthetic really catched me.
okay but what even is splatoon?
This is kinda the "review" part.
Splatoon is a third-person shooter developed by Nintendo EPD5. Unlike other shooters, it's not about dark edgy military dark
piss-filter bullshit, instead it's colorful and happy. It has a campaign and an online battle mode with 2 modes, and starting with
splatoon 2, an extra mode called "salmon run", where you try to survive 3 waves and in exchange get cool stuff.
It doesn't have any microtransactions either.
Online
There are 2 online modes: Ranked and Turf War. In Turf War, you have 3 minutes to cover the entire map with your ink while trying to
avoid/kill your enemies. The team with the most ink wins.
Ranked has 5 special modes: Rainmaker, Clam Blitz, Splat Zones
- In Rainmaker, the player can pick a goldfish up, which acts as a weapon while slowing you down. Their goal is to bring it to the enemy's base, which then ends the match.
- Clam Blitz is the most disliked. Basically, you need to collect a bunch of randomly-spawning clams and throw them in the enemy's basket. The player first needs to collect 10 clams, which then turns them into a basketball, and can destroy the enemy team's defense. Once destroyed, the team can throw clams into the basket, but if they take too long, the defense recovers.
- In Tower Control, the team must stand on the tower for it to move towards the other enemy's base. If no one is on it, it slowly moves back to the center
- Splat Zones is basically just king of the hill. It's like turf war, but concentrated on a small (or 2) area. The dominant ink color brings the counter up, and at 100 they win.
Story Mode
The gameplay in story mode is pretty basic. It's basically a 3d mario with weapons, ink, octopuses and a story. It's really fun though.
My upcoming lore page talks about it in detail.
Music
The music in Splatoon is very unique. It ranges from garage punk rock and J-Pop to IDM, goofy ass music and even ambient
